Full leather covers with gilt boarder around edges and on spine; Spine covers are very worn; Front board is detached, though present; Corners are lightly bumped; A few dried spots are noted on front board; The letters "PS" are in faded red on rear board; Marbled edges, and paste downs and endpages; Moisture stain and penciled names on blank front endpages; Volume is tight, and contents are otherwise clean and intact.

N/D (1965) Very slight age toning and very slight rubbing along bottom edges of cloth covers; DJ shows a quarter inch closed tear from top edge of inside front flap; DJ shows general very light edge wear; Yellow band sealing book with quote from Karl Shapiro is very good, though shows light smudges on rear portion and a very slight chip just touching the text on front portion.

Signed "Christmas 1892 John James Ingalls" on front cover. Ingalls was the U.S. Senator from KS 1873-91. Signed by dedicatee, Edmund Clarence Stedman (Poet, essayist, and scientist), on dedication page. Also signed by Richard Smith (as R. S.) Spofford on pp 33, where he is mentioned. Spofford was husband to novelist Harriet Elizabeth Prescott Spofford and a lawyer from MA. Two gift inscriptions: One ffep reads, "To my Beloved New Friend Christmas 1892." The other inscription on rear pastedown reads, "To Frances E. Solomon- From Mrs Ingalls- September 16, 1900". Book shows moderate soiling to covers with light edge wear. Hinges tight, binding slightly loose. A few spots of foxing scattered through text. Supremely unique piece with more than a couple stories to tell.; Signed by Signed
