Inscription on title page reads, "The Master of Balliol - from his friend RB. / May 7 '73." Book is presumed a gift from Browning to Benjamin Jowett, the then Master at Balliol College at Oxford, with whom a correspondence is documented. Green cloth covers show light edge wear and light surface staining. Corners square but rubbed through, Spine ends and external hinges show heavier (still light) wear. Front internal hinge cracked, binding somewhat loose. Scattered foxing throughout book. A later date (May 1957) is written on ffep in pen along with a pencil signature. On title page, near inscription, an old price is written very lightly in pen. Includes telegram dated May 8, 1957 which reads, "Yes R.B's handwriting and signature. Our good friend Mr. Cramer sent to England for it. I agree what a find. Other little book also first I think. He is looking for the silent answer. Letter pending. L.L."; Signed by Author(s)

N/D (ca. 1929); Number 209 of a limited edition; Full leather covers with gilt lettering; Top edge gilt and others are uncut; This volume has been exposed to a heat source causing some damage, though there is NO smoke or other oder; Spine covers are darkened with a small black spot near rear head of spine; This spot barely touches gilt lettering, though lettering remains bright and intact; There is some darkening along top edge of covers, as well as edges of text; There is a small (half inch circluar) burned spot at top edge of front cover near outside edge; There is a little general light rubbing along edges; This volume remains tight; Internally, there are a few very light smudges, and there is a small and very light moisture stain on the blank front end page; End pages show some darking along edges about 1/8th inch in, though other leaves show darkening only on very edge; Contents are otherwise clean and intact; Volume is much nice than it sounds.

Bound in full red moroccan leather with gilt title, tooled spine bands, and gilt edges. Overall volumes are in near fine condition with light general wear. Volume 1 has slightly heavier wear from handling. About half of the volumes have heavy bumping to top spine end from removal and replacement in presentation box. The box itself is also bound in full red leather and is in very good condition with scattered scratching and rubbing at edges. Inside hinge of box lid is broken but still strong, outside hinge shows only light wear. Bottom of box lid has a gilt list of individual volume contents. Beautiful set!
